Thriving Through Purpose, Meaning and Connection

When I give health talks on longevity people are often surprised that the topics I cover include purpose, meaning and connection. Most of us think about healthy habits surrounding nutrition, exercise, sleep and managing stress, but it turns out not enough of us consider the important role that these less tangible experiences and feelings have on our health.

My father in law recently passed away at the age of 101. He lived a remarkable, full life and until he was 100 he remained very active and engaged. I believe his zest for life was due in large part to the purpose and meaning he found from his hobbies. Even in his 9th decade, he played golf several times a week, often opting to skip the cart and walk. He loved guitar and played in a band. When he was no longer able to drive he stopped going to the golf course and joining in with the band, but he practiced his swing in the back year and played his guitar every single day. His physical and mental “exercise” came from joyful activities that he loved. Until his sudden decline he continued to talk fondly about the connection he shared with his former band mates and golf partners, they clearly had a big impact on his life.

In the Netflix documentary The Blue Zones, Dan Buettner’s work illustrates the power of meaning, purpose and connection in contributing to a long, vibrant quality of life. Rather than aging with disease, the people he met and interviewed aged with joy. They had no gym, fast food or cell phones. But they had a community with social support and livelihoods. They shared a purpose and a connection. And they thrived.

Reflecting on your life, consider:

·         Do you have a hobby you love, a cause that is important to you or a friendship that you cherish?

·         Do you feel as if you are growing, learning and truly “alive”?

·         Do you wake up each morning filled with excitement for the day ahead?

If you feel there is room in your life for stronger connections or a greater purpose, think of what this might look like. Perhaps you want to volunteer, join a club or try a new hobby. Just like good sleep, sound nutrition and managing stress, these connections can be life changing.
