May is for Movement!

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, so this seems a perfect time to look at ways to add to or increase the physical activity in our lives. Our bodies were designed for movement. What can you envision yourself doing? Options include walking, running, tennis, pickle ball, bike riding, yoga, pilates, swimming, and dancing just to name a few. Below are some general tips on how to establish and maintain an exercise program that is right for you. (It is always a good idea to check with your physician before embarking on a new exercise plan).
Find things you enjoy doing- the best type of exercise is what brings you pleasure, so experiment and be creative. Don’t overlook the pleasure and health benefits of working in the yard, flying a kite or walking on the beach.
Intersperse movement throughout the day. You don’t have to do it all at once; several 10-15 minute periods of movement are just as effective as one 30-45 minute session. And there are added health benefits when you take a short walk after a meal, especially dinner.
Track your progress for inspiration. Create specific goals that you can measure. Instead of saying “I will get fit”, which is an outcome, be clear about the behaviors that will get you there. This might be “I will walk four times a week for a minimum of 20 minutes for better health”. You can track your progress on a calendar or in a journal.
Need more motivation? Place your goals where you can see them, and share your plan with a friend, family member or coach for accountability.
Exercise doesn’t need to be expensive. Walking only requires supportive shoes, many cable channels offer exercise classes and websites have free programs that you can follow.
Start slowly, adding a bit more time or intensity each week. Be kind to your body by taking baby steps that you can build on.
Smile and celebrate your successes. Feel proud that you are making exercise and movement a priority for your long term health and well-being.
