Have a Lighter New Year

We often greet the New Year with a list of things we tell ourselves we should do, add, adopt or change about our lives. The intention is good, and yet this approach can actually be very stressful! For years, I too was a fan of setting one or more resolutions, and yet as is so often the case, they didn’t always endure.

What if this year instead of adding more things to accomplish achieve or do, you aim to take something away from your life, schedule or to do list? It may sound odd, but consider this backwards approach as a kind and gentle way to lower your stress. Try these suggestions to get you started:

Remove! One way to go about this re-frame is to look candidly at your weekly calendar or schedule. Is there something you would love to remove? Perhaps you continue to say yes to a commitment that no longer brings you fulfillment or enjoyment. If something on your schedule doesn’t bring you a smile perhaps it’s time to give it up. No one should be offended when you make yourself and your time a priority.

Re-evaluate! Next, consider the emails and or social media content that you subscribe to- are some emails piling up that you just don't have the time to read? Do you follow sites that no longer feel useful or relevant? If so, consider unsubscribing! Every time we let something go, we can open up space to feel lighter, freer and less overwhelmed.

Recreate! Imagine you have a blank canvas and are creating your year ahead; what do you really want to experience? How do you truly wish to spend your precious time? What will bring you a sense of purpose, connection and joy? Journaling these questions can be a great way to discover a long buried interest or new area of curiosity that is beckoning for your attention. Maybe there is a new hobby, class or community activity that is calling your name. Or, maybe you are attracted to the simple act of being at home with those you love.

Replace! If you discover an untapped interest, don’t be tempted to add it to your full list of commitments and activities. Consider how you can replace this new possibility with something in your calendar that no longer lights you up.

Rejoice! Congratulations! You have made a huge investment in your well-being and life satisfaction. Consider this a head start on Spring cleaning.
