Feeling Exhausted? Try This Simple Strategy

Whether I’m catching up with friends or coaching a client, one theme keeps surfacing: exhaustion. Many of us are feeling depleted, and while the reasons may vary, I’d rather focus on what we can do to feel better.

It might seem counterintuitive, but one of the most effective ways to combat exhaustion is to move.

I get it—it’s tempting to stay bundled up on the couch, especially during these bitterly cold winter days (yes, even here in Florida!). But movement doesn’t have to mean an intense workout or an hour at the gym. It can be as simple as standing up to stretch, practicing a few yoga poses, or walking a few laps around your living room.

The Power of Small Movements

I recently read Built to Move by Kelly and Juliet Starrett, a fascinating book that highlights how our bodies are designed for movement. They emphasize that even small, consistent activities can have a profound impact on our mood, energy, and overall health. Walking, for example, is called “the best movement tool available.”

On the flip side, prolonged sitting can be detrimental to our health, mobility, and longevity. So, here’s a simple invitation I share with my coaching clients:

Set a timer on your phone, and every hour, get up and move for 3–5 minutes.

This doesn’t have to be complicated. For me, it might mean:

  • Walking circles around my kitchen

  • Flowing through a few sun salutations

  • Stepping outside for a quick stroll (when the weather cooperates)

The results can be remarkable. You may find yourself returning to your day with renewed energy, focus, and clarity.

Movement as Self-Care

What’s wonderful about this habit is that it’s not about counting calories or checking off another “to-do.” It’s about honoring your body and mind with a simple act of self-care.

While you walk or stretch, take a moment to count your blessings, reflect on what you’re grateful for, or simply enjoy the rhythm of your breath. Movement can be a form of meditation, helping you center yourself in the present moment.

Even a brief movement break can leave you feeling refreshed, more at ease, and ready to tackle the rest of your day with purpose.

Ready to Start?

Give it a try! Set your timer, stand up, and move for a few minutes each hour. It’s a small habit with the potential for big rewards.

Your body—and your energy levels—will thank you.
