Join me in celebrating National Nutrition Month, which was created 50 years ago in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This campaign is a great reminder about how we can boost our health by making good food choices. The campaign also highlights the importance of regular physical activity. Want to participate? Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Chase the rainbow- for one week track how many different fruits and vegetables you can incorporate into your meals. Think of the rainbow (yes even white cauliflower) and aim for variety.
Pick a recipe that calls for an herb or spice that you are new to. Introducing a new plant into your diet is wonderful for your health and immunity.
Offer to host a potluck and ask guests to bring an item that was made at home rather than a pre-packaged dish.
Be a detective; read food labels carefully. If an item has artificial sweeteners put it back. If it contains a lot of added sugar per serving, consider having a smaller portion or a piece of fruit instead.
If your budget allows, consider taking a healthy cooking class. This is a wonderful way to learn and have fun with friends.
If you are a creature of habit (most of us are) try a meal from a different country or cuisine. There are thousands of recipe idea online.
When possible, shop locally. Is there a farmer’s market you can visit for fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables? You can support your local farmers and your health at the same time.
Eat mindfully- if you typically eat with the TV on or while scrolling through your phone, enjoy silence (and perhaps the company of others) while you savor your meal.
Plant an herb garden. Even if you just have a small windowsill you can have fun growing your own herbs. This can be great fun for young children too.
Find some form of movement every day. Remember little things add up. Take the stairs, park far away from the entrance to a building and look for creative ways to incorporate movement into your day.
Let electronics help you! There are now so many different fitness watches on the market that can be a great source of motivation to get moving. Whether you want to track the number of steps you’ve taken or get a reminder to move, these can be a great fitness tool.
Try taking a walk after dinner. This simple habit will help you minimize a glucose spike from your meal and aide in digestion. It can be something as simple as a walk around the block.
